I've been spending a lot of time in Mar Vista lately, and it's reminded me just how special this neighborhood is.
Living right on the border, I feel incredibly lucky to have so many places that make this community feel like home. Mar Vista has this rare balance of feeling both vibrant and deeply local. Familiar faces, weekly rituals, and the kind of restaurants and cafés where you almost always run into someone you know.
These are some of the places that have made me fall in love with Mar Vista.
Because the best neighborhoods aren't defined by their boundaries. They're built one favorite spot at a time.

Hatchet Hall
One of those restaurants that always gets everything right. Warm, cozy, and effortlessly cool. My favorite order? The cast iron cornbread, baked oysters, and always anything involving honey butter, which means the house potato rolls are a must. It’s the kind of place that works equally well for date night or a long dinner with friends.
But what I really love is that the night doesn’t have to end there. Tucked behind the restaurant is Old Man Bar, one of my favorite bars in all of LA. Great cocktails, great music, and a crowd that somehow always feels just right. It has this intimate, hidden feel that makes you want to settle in and stay awhile. Dinner at Hatchet Hall followed by "just one drink" at Old Man is one of my favorite combinations on the Westside... and somehow it never ends with just one.
Electric Bleu
My favorite addition to the neighborhood. French-inspired without feeling overly serious. The electric blue interiors are chic, the patio is dog friendly, and the kitchen counter is one of my favorite spots for date night.
While there are staples like the signature roast chicken (which deserves all the attention it gets) and the fries with chicken salt that are dangerously addictive (no ketchup needed), the menu changes regularly, which keeps me coming back. This week I had the Lamb Sirloin, Hokkaido Scallop Crudo, and Nectarine Salad, and all three were incredible.
With the sommelier presenting the French-leaning wine list tableside, it’s very easy to settle in for a while. It feels polished but approachable, which is probably why it already feels like it’s been part of the neighborhood forever. And whatever you do, leave room for dessert.
Bluey's
Honestly, I don't know what we did before Bluey's.
Whether it's a Saturday afternoon catch-up, a leisurely brunch, or a Sunday breakfast-in-bed DoorDash order, this neighborhood staple is always reliable. Always busy, often hunting for a seat, and I've yet to have anything that isn't a hit.
My go-to breakfast order is the Little Gordo Sammy or the Açaí Bowl, and for lunch, it's the Chopped Kale Salad or the Bon Bon Burrito (which might just be my favorite thing on the menu).
Grab a glass of wine, soak up some sunshine, and you're pretty much guaranteed to run into at least one person you know. Peak neighborhood vibes.
Saby's Coffee + Kitchen
You know a place is good when the line is wrapped down the block before you've even had your coffee.
Located right across the street from Bluey's, Saby's has quietly become one of the breakfast burrito destinations on the Westside. And honestly, I get the hype.
Their burritos are huge, packed with flavor, and worth every nap you'll need afterward. The Chipotle Breakfast Burrito seems to be the crowd favorite, but since I don't eat pork, I usually go with the OG. Either way, they're the kind of breakfast burritos that ruin all other breakfast burritos for you.

Tangaroa Fish Market
One of my all-time favorites and one that feels like a true local spot.
Equal parts fish market and casual restaurant, Tangaroa keeps things simple: incredibly fresh seafood from New Zealand, no frills, and a handful of picnic tables out front. Nothing fancy, and that's exactly the charm.
My must-order combo is the seared scallops and grilled octopus, plus an add-on of whatever new special catches my eye. Anything raw is always incredibly fresh and hard to pass up.
The perfect summer night spot when you want something casual, delicious, and don't feel like committing to a whole production. Just great seafood, good company, and neighborhood vibes.
Ginger's Divine Ice Cream
Located just down the street from both Hatchet Hall and Tangaroa, Ginger's is a neighborhood classic and proof that ice cream is always a good idea.
I've been coming here for years, and somehow every time I walk in, I still need to sample at least three flavors before I can land on one because there are simply too many good options.
Everything is made in-house, and the rotating flavors are half the fun. You really can't go wrong.
I love that it still feels like an old-school ice cream shop where families, kids, and neighbors gather after dinner. The perfect ending to a summer night and one of those places that just makes Mar Vista feel like home.
Beethoven Market
One of those places that perfectly captures what I love most about Mar Vista.
The menu is simple, thoughtfully curated, and somehow manages to have something for everyone without ever feeling overwhelming. Fresh handmade pastas, pizzas, roast chicken on the custom rotisserie... honestly, I've worked my way through most of the menu and have too many favorites to call out. It really just depends on the mood.
What I love most, though, is the feeling of the place. It’s where you grab a latte in the morning, meet friends for lunch, or settle into dinner and linger like you're in your own living room. You run into neighbors, see familiar faces, and are reminded that the best neighborhood spots are built around community. It genuinely feels like a place made by locals, for locals.

Little Fatty
A Mar Vista institution and one of those places that somehow works for just about any occasion.
Date night, dinner with friends, solo seat at the bar... it always delivers. The energy is lively without being overwhelming, the dining room is always buzzing, and I love that the soundtrack is old-school hip hop. Good food just tastes better with Pac in the background.
Call me basic, but I know what I like. My forever order is the scallion pancakes, orange chicken, green beans, and Fatty Fried Rice. I stray every now and then, but somehow always find my way back.
Great cocktails, incredible Taiwanese comfort food, and the kind of place where dinner has a habit of stretching into hours. Which, by now, you know is my favorite kind.
And while you're in the neighborhood, swing by Fatty Mart around the corner. Another Mar Vista favorite from the folks behind Little Fatty.
Mar Vista Farmers Market
Sunday mornings in Mar Vista.
One of my favorite rituals and one of the things that makes this neighborhood feel so special. It’s less of an errand and more of an experience. You run into neighbors, grab a coffee, listen to live music, and somehow leave with a tote bag full of things you definitely weren't planning on buying.
Fresh flowers, peak-season produce, incredible prepared foods, and plenty of dogs and babies to admire along the way.
And if you know, you know: Kokomoo Milks has developed something of a cult following. People quite literally come to the market for it, and once you've had one, you'll understand why.
It feels less like a market and more like a weekly gathering for the community. Which, I suppose, is exactly what it is. Don't be surprised if a quick stop turns into the better part of your morning. My favorite kind.
Taverna at The Mar Vista
One of those places I always wonder why more people don't talk about.
Taverna feels like a little Mediterranean escape right in the neighborhood. The menu strikes that perfect balance between healthy and indulgent. Authentic Greek food done simply and beautifully.
No scene, no fuss, just really good food and a lovely atmosphere. The kind of place where you settle in, order another round, and wonder why you don't come here more often.
A true neighborhood gem.
Quiadaiyn
This is the ultimate IFYKYK.
One of the most colorful spots in Mar Vista and a little slice of Oaxaca right on Venice Boulevard. Family-owned and deeply rooted in Oaxacan traditions, the menu is full of handmade tortillas, rich moles, and dishes that feel like they came straight from someone's home kitchen.
The space is lively and cheerful, and the back patio always seems to be buzzing.
And if you're a margarita person, this might become your new favorite spot. Their mezcal program is serious, the cocktails are excellent, and it's the kind of place that makes you want to order one more round and settle in for the evening.
Vibrant, soulful, and full of personality. A guaranteed good time.
More Than Great Restaurants
One of the things I love most about Mar Vista isn't just the restaurants.
It's the rhythm of the neighborhood.
The Sunday farmers market you look forward to all week. The coffee shop where the barista recognizes you. The dinner spot where you inevitably run into friends. The places that quietly become part of your routine until one day you realize they're part of what makes a place feel like home.
That's what I think people are really searching for when they choose a neighborhood. Not just a house, but a community. A place where everyday life feels a little richer because of the people, the small businesses, and the rituals that surround it.
These are a few of the places that make Mar Vista feel that way for me.
