Things I Always Tell Clients After They Close on Their a Home

Closing day is exciting, but I always tell my clients that buying a home isn't the finish line. It's the beginning of a new chapter.

After helping buyers across Los Angeles and the Westside, I've noticed that the first few weeks after moving can feel equal parts exciting and overwhelming. While everyone focuses on getting the keys, there are a few things I always encourage clients to do once they officially become homeowners.

Celebrate the Moment

Buying a home is a huge milestone.

In the whirlwind of paperwork, moving boxes, and logistics, it's easy to jump straight into the next task. But before anything else, pause and take it all in.

Open a bottle of champagne, order takeout on the floor, invite loved ones over, or simply enjoy the quiet for a moment. Homeownership deserves to be celebrated.

Make the Home Yours Right Away

One of the first things I recommend is changing the locks and updating any entry codes.

Even if you trust the previous owners, you never know how many copies of keys exist. Taking care of this immediately provides peace of mind and helps your new home truly feel like your own.

Give Yourself a Clean Slate

If you're planning on painting, making repairs, or doing a deep clean, do it before life moves in.

Once furniture is in place and routines begin, those small projects often become much bigger inconveniences. Starting fresh creates a sense of renewal and allows you to settle in more comfortably.

Don't Rush the Design Process

This is one of my strongest beliefs.

You don't need to furnish or decorate every room immediately. In fact, I encourage clients to live in the space first.

A home has a way of revealing itself over time. You'll discover where the morning light falls, which spaces naturally become gathering places, and what the home actually needs versus what you thought it needed.

Good design is rarely rushed.

Introduce Yourself to the Neighbors

Community matters more than most people realize.

Some of the best things about a neighborhood aren't listed on the MLS. They're discovered through the people who live there.

Whether it's a quick hello, joining a neighborhood group, or attending a local event, making connections early can turn a house into a true home.

Learn the Small Things Before You Need Them

Take time to locate the water shut-off valve, gas shut-off, electrical panel, and other essential systems.

Hopefully you'll never need them in an emergency, but knowing where they are ahead of time can save a tremendous amount of stress.

Test Everything

Smoke detectors, windows, doors, locks, garage openers, and other systems should all be checked after moving in.

These little details may not be glamorous, but they contribute greatly to peace of mind and help ensure your home is functioning as it should.

Find Your Trusted People Early

Every homeowner needs a great team.

A reliable handyman, electrician, plumber, and other service professionals can make homeownership infinitely easier.

Over the years, I've built relationships with wonderful vendors and tradespeople, and helping connect clients with trusted resources is one of my favorite parts of the job.

Home Is More Than a Transaction

Real estate has always been about more than buying and selling homes for me.

It's about creating a life you love, building community, and helping people settle into spaces where memories will be made for years to come.

Because getting the keys is just the beginning.

And I'd be honored to be part of your next chapter.
